The Diamond Centre for Living is a Wellness Centre supporting people with life-threatening illnesses. The centre is located in an important West End heritage structure leased from the City for $1/year. Forty noteworthy interior designers volunteered to collaborate on restoring a neglected Victorian home known as the Weeks House. Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of labour and materials were donated by IDIBC members and industry partners. Adapting an old house into a safe, accessible environment for people to work, meet, consult, eat, cook and support each other was a challenge.

Determined to avoid an institutional result, our team's greatest achievement was saving the open stair in the heart of the building that was in danger of becoming utilitarian and confined. Consulting with code guru Glenn Gibson we devised a design to make the space function as both a safe exit route and an attractive circulation path.
