The objective was to develop extremely flexible space, focusing on egalitarian, comfortable and effective work areas. To foster synergies and originality in academic programs, the plan emphasized spaces for informal interaction. With the requirement for a high ratio (85%) of the workspaces to be enclosed private offices, combined with a priority for access to natural light, it was quickly established that a conventional plan with all offices at the perimeter would not work; this led to the development of a main spine through the centre of each floor with secondary streets

leading to the perimeter. Each office steps back with full height glazing facing the exterior windows, drawing natural light into the centre of the floor. Spaces at the windows are assigned to open workstations and meeting areas.
